Do You Know Who You Are?

I believe that being impactful is really all about knowing who you are.

Let's face it teachers, we are lucky to be working. For every one of us, there are three or more waiting in the wings hoping to get a day's work. Teachers who have spent their lives in the profession found themselves unemployed in a massive layoff three years ago in my district. Are they back to work yet? Maybe, maybe not. The professional teacher must continually grow, stretch, and plan for what's ahead. We are all learning, all of the time. There's no room, or time, for stagnation.

I believe that the future belongs to those who have the eyes to see it, and the energy to implement new ideas. Their impact will be felt by and benefit all. We need to predict, and prevent, as we prepare our students for what lies ahead for them. The world is changing all around us. Those who are resistant to getting inboard will make the most noise, but they will still miss the train.

Education is in the a transitional state. Change brings fear and uncertainty to those who do not believe in the plan. In my opinion this is at the core of all of the politics in any business endeavor. You need to have a clear view of the vision, and you need to trust each other as you get there together. We need to encourage each other's strengths as we rise to the challenges that will face us. Together we are stronger than we are individually. When this mindset is off kilter, the system can become toxic. Just as a rosebush needs to be pruned and tended to, so does an organization.  Is the organization changing with the times? Are schools leading the way as they prepare our youth for what lies ahead?

Education needs to keep pace with a world that is in turmoil in many ways. Americans are not accustomed to being second, or third, or lower yet. When it comes to global positioning, where are we in the pack of contenders? It's high time to bring in our 'A' game. Politics are good so long as they foster healthy competition. The best players get the most court time. It has always been that way. What do you bring to the game?

I believe that I am in continual transformation. As opportunities present themselves I need to have the eyes and the wisdom to know how I can utilize my skills, experience, and passion best.  Knowing myself is a lifelong event. Every day I do my best to deliver the goods.
