We do not have easy jobs. Many of us serve as role models to our students for what's good in the world. The message streaming from the masses at the sound of light is
contrary to what we many of us were brought up believing in. This
message is flawed, jaded, and streaming 24/7. The white noise is louder
than we can imagine.
As Teacher leaders we find ways to build
connections back to the heart of what is right. Some of the time it is
just overwhelming to keep in paddling against a tide that has become so
vast, and so mighty. Our actions speak louder than words. We are armed
with all that we need to lift our students so long as they have the eyes
to see. They are watching, and we will continue to make a difference because that's who we are.
The days when I feel low I think about Helen Keller's teacher Anne
Sullivan. I think about Stephen Hawking, and other people through out
history who have risen triumphantly against challenges that most would
surrender to without even the slightest effort. Playing the victim is a
learned behavior. We can teach them differently, if we catch them early
enough. There are students in our classes who will change the world
someday. Those stories are yet unwritten by people we haven't met yet.
There are teachers building relationships, and planting seeds that will
grow the fruit that will feed and nourish them for life. Maybe those
same seeds will feed us, too. I am a revelationist. The Divine will
intervene.
I am forever grateful to the teachers who showed me the way to find
my dreams, and to work hard. Really hard when I need to. We all have
choices. When that hard to reach student is attempting to blow me off I
need to remember that he (or she) wasn't born that way, and that it's
not personal. Some days are just tough. These kids need to be tougher to
keep up with the changing world around them.
That's why we all need to support each other along the way.
