Global awareness starts in our homes. When we get the opportunity to try on someone else's shoes and walk in them for a while, we get a very different view than if we just looked from the outside. Understanding that the world is much smaller than we think it is is becoming much more commonplace. The advances in technology have created a world in which the entire universe in now our classroom. With the power of the Internet, and countless advances in technology, we have the means to break down barriers that have separated humanity throughout history.
Incorporating a global point of view is done daily inside of my classroom. Throughout many lessons we utilize video casts, virtual tours, skyping, and email to connect with our global community. Incorporating global events into daily lessons helps the students to understand that their voice is heard, powerful, and that they have the freedom to use it. That is a privilege that many American men and women have died for.
When I think about things that I do to promote Global Awareness I can think of so many. First, modeling Earth Friendly living daily is a start. I also lead our Annual Earth Day Art Festival. We will celebrated the arts on Earth Day this April. All grades are invited to enter a piece of art that illustrates their compassion for the Earth, and for each other.
Additionally, I am hosting an art activity booth at our four-school-wide Kindness Challenge in January. In celebration on National Anti-Bully Month, we will promote kindness this January. The art activity booth that I am hosting is called the Kind HeART challenge. Family friendly activities will be available to do all day, free of charge.
Kindness, diversity, and compassion are also promoted on a daily basis inside of my classroom. This is done leading by example, and through setting clear expectations and boundary setting.
What can you do today to increase global awareness ?
