School Politics

My score in the area of politics that exist within my workplace was 9/25. As expected, this was very low. As credentialed employees we understand that we need to pull our own weight. At my school we each signed an "at will" clause when we were hired. That means delivering what is expected, and more, every day.

The changing atmosphere and climate of education today attracts a certain personality type to the playing field. Some organizations are characterized by extreme levels of political activity, while others are far less political. The title of Leader comes to mind. What does the this title mean to YOU? Is a Teacher Leader someone that you report to, or someone that you aspire to become? This classification makes a world of difference. They way that we arrive is the way that we play the game. Either you're in, or you're out. Are you ready to deliver? I would believe that you are.

Political behavior follows when one agrees fully, or strongly disagrees with behaviors practiced. For example, the teacher who stands to gain from the perspective of a particular culture will not be aware of the political turmoil. The flip side is that this same culture causes others to feel anxiety and turmoil. Some will benefit, while others will feel negative repercussions of the same event. This is the proverbial Yin Yang of life. Within education this sort of circumstantial cause and effect comes as a surprise. Has corporate America taken over? Is competition taking the place of compassion?

So many of us join forces to produce positive outcomes that will leave long lasting positive results for those that we serve. We have a heart for service. Unfortunately, political behavior in school organizations is far more likely when the conditions foster competitive behaviors.

The 21st century classroom demands that each participant is an activist for change. "Lifelong learner" is so much more than a catch phrase. We are dedicated to this mission for life. Our students deserve dedicated Teacher leaders who are authentic. Dedication, passion, and honesty will grow symbiotic relationships for the greater good of the whole. Does every teacher think of him or herself as a leader? As an activist for change? I believe that the future of education depends on this.

When employees view this motivation as negative, the question that remains is why? This is a game changer in the direction of education as we know it. "Either lead, follow, or get out of the way,"  still rings in our ears. Thomas Paine was indeed a visionary.  How will your impact be felt? What does the future look like to you? We need to come together and make it better than ever.
